Our Featured Poet:
★ Mariposa is an award winning Nuyorican poet whose poetry has been featured on the critically acclaimed HBO Latino series, "Habla Ya" and the HBO documentary “Americanos: Latino Life in the US”, produced by Edward James Olmos, Nick Athas and Time Warner. Mariposa has also been seen on BET, Lifetime and PBS. A Native New Yorker born and raised in The Bronx, Mariposa earned a BA in Women’s Studies with a concentration in English Literature and a MA in Education from New York University.

Mariposa is the author of Born Bronxeña: Poems on Identity, Love & Survival. She has published articles and poetry in numerous publications including the Norton Anthology of Latino Literature, The Afro Latin@ Reader: History and Culture in the United States, El Centro Journal, The Hostos Review, Resistance in Paradise: 100 Years of U.S. Colonialism, Drum Voices Volume 23 and Def Poetry Jam’s Bumrush the Page. Mariposa has performed at universities and major venues throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and abroad.

Featured Visual Artist:
★ Nelson Host Santiago, a New York City native, deeply rooted in
his Puerto Rican heritage, was born in Harlem and raised in the
Bronx. Nelson discerned his innate artistic talent at the tender
age of four largely influenced by comic books with colorful
images depicting various superheroes, producing his earliest
works without any formal training. Not long afterward, captivated
by urban hip hop culture, Nelson immersed himself into the world
of graffiti art, thus “Host One” emerged unto the cityscape
as he actively engaged in Wild Style pieces as well as street
bombing on a myriad of metropolitan “canvases”. Nelson currently
participates in a variety of gallery shows and live painting
events.

Capicu Cultural Showcase

We are a producer of diverse poetry and performing arts events in New York City, formed using the philosophies of the most progressive intellectual and artistic movements of the last century (i.e. The Harlem Renaissance, the Beat Poets & most notably the Nuyorican Movement). We were founded in Brooklyn in March 2007 as an Open Mic & made our presence felt immediately by featuring both veterans as well as up-and-coming performers of spoken word, prominent visual artists, comedians, and select musical guests covering the genres of salsa, bomba y plena, progressive hip hop, and more. We have taken our brand to major academic institutions like New York University, Hunter College and Long Island University, and we have also taken our brand to major international corporations like National Grid Energy and Pepsi.
